Methodology
Data Sources
Layoff event data is sourced from jobloss.ai, a daily-updated tracker maintained by The Alliance for Secure AI. It tracks AI-linked job losses since January 2025.
Stock price data is sourced from Yahoo Finance, providing daily OHLCV data for publicly traded companies worldwide.
Layoff Classifications
The company publicly cited AI, automation, or machine learning as a reason for the workforce reduction.
At least one credible news outlet identified AI as a primary driver, even if the company did not say so directly.
AI is cited alongside other material factors like restructuring, market conditions, or cost reduction.
Impact Calculation
For each layoff event at a publicly traded company, we measure the stock price change at three intervals:
- 1 Day — Close price on the next trading day after the announcement
- 1 Week — Close price 5 trading days after the announcement
- 1 Month — Close price 21 trading days after the announcement
The base price is the daily close on the trading day before the announcement. All changes are expressed as percentages relative to this base price. We also track each daily close in between, which powers the per-event trajectory charts.
Market cap impact is estimated by multiplying the 1-day percentage change by the company's most recent reported market capitalization.
Caveats
- Correlation does not imply causation. Stock prices are influenced by many factors beyond layoff announcements.
- Layoff announcements may be priced in before the official announcement date.
- Daily trajectory data may be incomplete for older events depending on data availability.
- Only publicly traded companies have stock data. Private company layoffs are shown without impact metrics.
- Market cap figures are approximate and may not reflect the exact value at the time of announcement.
